ArtPrize

This weekend launched the first ArtPrize in Grand Rapids. I have to admit when I first heard about it I was skeptical. But I fully admit now that it was pretty sweet. So funny that the home of the Festival of the Arts (aka "Festival") - a decidedly lame event, can also be host to this amazing spectacle of creativity. I suppose the $250,000 prize helps.

For those of you not familiar, ArtPrize is the brainchild of one of the DeVos (aka Amway Corp.) children. Anyone can enter, you just have to find a venue. Then folks walk around town looking at art and voting via their cell phones or online. The first round you vote thumbs up or thumbs down. The second round you just vote for your favorite of the top 10. The art is up 9/23 - 10/10 and judging by what we saw on Sunday is providing a huge boost to the local economy.

Check it out here.

We tried to get video of the launching of the 100,000 paper airplanes, but it didn't work out so well for us. However, you can view someone else's here.

We were under the purple section, unintentionally. Joel got hit with a huge clump, but no injury. When we left at 4 pm I only saw 2 planes still lingering around, not too bad. This was created by the 20-year old who also organized the pillow fight & zombie walk downtown. Should be interesting to see what he comes up with in the future.

  1. So, did you manage to save a nice one for Konrad's momentos? 100,000 is a ton of paper airplanes! Looks like it brought out a big crowd.

  2. I am soooo not sentimental like that. In fact the thought never even entered my mind until my co-worker asked the same thing this morning. Poor K. He'll probably be the type of kid who wants to save every movie stub and concert ticket, meanwhile his mom will be tossing them out willy-nilly. Joel is far more sentimental than I am.

  3. Zombie Walk? I don't really know what that is, but I'm sure Eric would be interested since he believes H1N1 might bring on the Zombie Apocolypse.
